What do I do with my feet in a vinyasa?

To roll over the toes or not to roll over the toes…that is the question…

This question was brought up to me after I posted a video of myself doing a vinyasa to promote an upcoming skill building workshop.

Why you would want to do one over the other? Sometimes rolling over your toes may disrupt the distance between your hands and your feet resulting in the shoulders not being in the appropriate position for upward facing dog. It may also disrupt the distance between the hands and feet in your downward facing dog.

Things to notice in the above video:

In the video I do two vinyasas:

In the first one you will notice I slide my whole body back slightly to create the space to roll over the toes when going to upward facing dog from chaturanga. This allows me to have my shoulders stacked directly above my wrists. I also roll over the toes and keep them tucked under in the transition to downward facing dog. Making for a smoother transition and a nice stretch to the top of my foot.

In the second one you will notice from chaturanga I flip one foot at a time so the tops of my feet are down. This keeps my shoulders in the appropriate position for upward facing dog. The same manual flip happens on the transition from upward facing into downward facing dog.

I would say give both a try and whichever puts your body in the best alignment should be the way you should go! Try them both and let me know what you think!
